3.9.0 - Current

Release date

New:

  • Android 15: Genymotion Desktop now supports Android 15. Enjoy improved quick start functionality and no more lockscreen interruptions between sessions.
  • Cloud instances: A new tab on the main page lists your Genymotion SaaS instances. Future updates will bring seamless integration of cloud devices within Genymotion Desktop.
  • Storage management: Easily manage disk space used by Genymotion in the settings. Access detailed information and tools for cache and virtual device storage management.

Changes:

  • UI improvements: The user interface has been refreshed with a new sidebar, footer, and subtle enhancements to the main page.
  • Simplified filters: Filters have been streamlined to better match common usage. The UI has been cleaned up; the search bar and sorting options are now the main tools to find your virtual devices.
  • Notifications: The notification panel has been improved to display more information and be more user-friendly.
  • Update management: Information about the latest version of Genymotion Desktop is now displayed in the settings. You can now easily check if you are up to date and download the latest version.
  • Troubleshooting page: “About” information and various troubleshooting tools and links have been consolidated in a new page for easier access.
  • Linux installer: The Linux binary installer extension has been changed from “.bin” to “.run” for better consistency with the Linux ecosystem.
  • VirtualBox (Windows): Supported VirtualBox version is 7.0.26.

Fixes:

  • Fixed an issue where devices would not start on Apple Silicon M4.
  • Fixed license activation issue on some Windows hosts with high security settings.

Known issues:

  • Camera: The camera may not work correctly after a device is resumed from a snapshot (quick boot). A cold boot may be required. a blank screen (when this happens, mirroring is unavailable, but other features still work).
  • Quick boot: quick boot issue when foreground app is a Gecko-based app.
  • Android 15 & 16: on Windows hosts, Android 15 & 16 may be slow and unresponsive.
  • VirtualBox: Android 15 & 16 are not functioning properly with VirtualBox hypervisor.

  • Device Link: Use your smartphone to capture touch events and motion sensor data.
  • Motion Sensors: Emulate accelerometer, magnetometer, and gyroscope sensors. You can also use your smartphone as a sensor provider via the Device Link feature.
  • High-Resolution Camera Injection (720p): Now available with updated Android images (version 12.0 and above).
  • Gamepad support: Connect your gamepad controller to play Android games for a more immersive experience (available for Android 12 and higher). Dynamic Root Access: Now available for Android 12 and higher.

Changes:

  • The Remote Control widget has been replaced with the Device Link feature.
  • Added preview for paid features.

Fixes:

  • Improved support for High-DPI screens.
  • Fixed Cut/Copy/Paste keyboard shortcuts on macOS.
  • Enhanced error messaging for APK installation failures.
  • Restricted QEMU port forwarding to the localhost interface.
  • Fixed screenshot issues in landscape mode when using the Capture widget.

Known issues:

  • Device Link app may occasionally display a blank screen (when this happens, mirroring is unavailable, but other features still work).
  • Dummy Camera does not support HD, but image injection works.
  • Motion Sensors 3D scene is disabled on some systems, such as Mac, due to the lack of OpenGL 3.3 support.

Known issues:

  • Android 5: Sim Operator information requires to switch Airplane mode ON and OFF to be taken in consideration.
  • Android 11 and lower: MSIN will appear as invalid in the Baseband widget, remove one digit to apply further changes.

  • Multi-display does not work properly with Android 13.

Release date

New:

  • Android 11.
  • System images 3.0.0 are now available, bringing lots of improvements.
  • We uncoupled the Android version from the hardware properties, to allow the deployment of any combination of simulated devices with any supported version of Android. Device creation & edition were reworked consequently, with different parameters separated in steps and tabs (depending on context: creation or edition)
  • Experimental support for QEMU hypervisor. Performance throughout the launchpad and player should be much better than with VirtualBox.
  • New quick boot feature: the device state at player exit is saved instead of shutting down. This allows a quick launch without going through the long boot process. Only available with QEMU on macOS and Linux.
  • Customizable toolbar: you can choose which widgets to show as well as their order.
  • Customizable Virtual Device shortcuts.
  • VM heap size (amount of RAM allocated by the Java Virtual Machine per app) can now be customized (during device creation or edition).
  • Android 9 and later: rounded corners can now be set up at device creation and edition.
  • New Media Injection widget, replacing the old Camera widget. This allows to feed the virtual device microphone and cameras with media files as well as any detected host camera.
  • New Settings widget, providing new features and information through several tabs:
    • Some information about the current device and useful links are now available.
    • Virtual Device shortcuts are now customizable.
    • Information about open-source licenses is now more easily accessible.
  • New Android Controls widget to simulate various physical buttons such as directional pad, multimedia buttons, call buttons.
  • Reworked Network widget, with support for simulating Wifi connection, and more detailed Mobile data connection profiles.

Changes:

  • gmtool has been fully reworked. Syntax and usage have also been improved to be more consistent with other command-line tools. More help information is now available for each command in nested levels of details.
  • Device rotation has been reworked: instead of simply choosing between Portrait (0°) and Landscape (270°), the display can now be rotated in any direction (clockwise or counterclockwise) by increments of 90°.
  • Some light UI touch-ups, both in the launchpad and the player.
  • Wording of error messages has been improved, providing clearer information and redirecting to more specific parts of the documentation.
  • Share app feature has been removed.
  • Android 4.4 is deprecated and has been removed.
  • Emulator window title now shows the ADB serial instead of the IP.

  • gmtool: The ‘gmtool admin list’ command now displays the right IP for each listed device instead of 0.0.0.0 (this was a regression introduced in 3.2.0 by a change meant to improve performance).
  • Fixed foreground application detection not working with Android 10.
  • Improved device startup reliability on slow computers.
  • Player window stays in place after performing an ‘adb reboot’.
  • Fixed device reconnection issues with Android 9.
  • Fixed gmtool zsh completion when installing Genymotion as root.

  • OpenGL ES 3.0 support, making it possible to test more advanced 3D code.
  • The GPS widget now lets you load GPX files and replay them.
  • It is now possible to disable clipboard sharing between virtual devices and the host operating system.
  • If you have a touch screen, you can now send proper multitouch events, including gestures like pinch to zoom.

Changes:

  • The Player user interface has received a Material facelift, giving it a more modern appearance.
  • The GPS widget map now uses OpenGL for rendering: maps are now crisper, zoom is smoother, and texts are always correctly oriented.
  • The gmtool admin list, gmtool admin start and gmtool admin stop commands no longer require a license, making it possible to use gmtool to build integration with other tools like IDE.
  • genyshell learned the -q command line option to avoid printing a banner, making it easier to integrate in scripts.
  • We updated the bundled version of VirtualBox in the Windows installer to 6.1.14.

Fixes:

  • The Open GApps downloading code is more robust.
  • Fixed gmtool admin stop command freeze.
  • Some UI elements were blurry on HiDPI displays.
  • When using an authenticated proxy, changing the proxy username no longer requires restarting Genymotion Desktop.
  • On macOS, the Finder “Get Info” dialog now correctly displays Genymotion Desktop version.
  • Fixed a regression in the GPS widget which made it impossible to type negative coordinates.
  • The GPX replay feature now accepts GPX files without altitude or time information.
  • Fixed the overflow menu of the emulator toolbar not showing keyboard shortcuts anymore on macOS.
  • Fixed a regression which caused keyboard shortcuts to do nothing when they were activated the first time.

Changes:

  • Windows: VirtualBox 6.1 support.
  • Linux: New devices are now configured to use PulseAudio, improving sound support.

Fixes:

  • Fixed problems with VirtualBox 6.1 host-only interfaces on Windows.
  • Fixed virtual device screens appearing cropped in the top-left corner on high-dpi monitors on Windows.
  • Fixed mouse wheel on high-precision touchpads (Macbook touchpads, Magic Mouse) causing super-fast and jittery scrolling on macOS.
  • Fixed rotation setangle command in Genyshell: now the display rotates whenever the accelerometer value changes, as expected. Also applies to the remote-control feature.
  • Fixed heterogeneous-density multi-screen setups: rotating the device no longer causes the display to be zoomed.

  • Revamped User Interface:
    • On Windows and Linux, the Device Manager got its menu bar moved to the toolbar, saving vertical space.
    • We reorganized the widgets in the toolbar, streamlined the layout of most widgets and refreshed the navigation icons.
    • The title of the Emulator window is now more useful, with individual information (IP, device name) about the device first.
    • Removed duplicated title from widgets, making them smaller and cleaner.
    • Improved VirtualBox error messages.

Changes:

  • Removed the --cloud option from gmtool. It has been superseded by gmsaas CLI tool for Gneymotion SaaS.
  • All Android images older than 4.4 have been removed.

Fixes:

  • Improved performances with the latest versions of Android, especially on macOS.
  • Better performance with Camera feature on macOS Catalina.

Changes:

  • Drag’n’dropping images and videos has been improved: when a media file is dropped, the Android media library is automatically refreshed without having to restart the device.

  • We have adjusted the way we call “adb connect” and also updated the version we ship with the product to match the one in platform-tools 28.0.2.

Fixes:

  • Fixed compatibility with the adb tool bundled in the platform-tools 28.0.2 package of the Android SDK, which caused failures to start virtual devices.

Changes:

  • VirtualBox bundeld with Genymotion Desktop installer for Windows has been bumped to 6.0.4.

Fixes:

  • Fixed an incompatibility with VirtualBox 6.0 which caused updates of virtual devices to fail and made it impossible to modify the memory size of existing devices.
  • Fixed an issue with gmtool not being able to create a virtual device from a template shared on Genymotion Cloud.

Changes:

  • Added more info in the log files to help issue investigations
  • Genymotion warns you if the certificate used on an https request is not valid. (only for requests done from the main window, requests made from the virtual device will be secured by Android OS or the browser.)
  • The version of VirtualBox bundled in the Windows installer has been updated to 5.2.22.
  • When changing the battery level from the command line, the mode automatically switches from host to manual.
  • When signing out, every Genymotion Cloud devices are disconnected from adb.

Fixes:

  • Android 8.0 network bridge feature has been fixed.
  • Fixed gmtool command to stop devices in Genymotion Cloud returning before the device has stopped.

Known issues:

  • Graphical rendering of Android 9.0 is still slow on MacOS. The next release will dramatically improve the performance.
